Shouldn’t I be able to reach my own goals?

This could be a great first question to explore with your coach. The idea that we should be able to do things on our own is a belief. We may want to, but believing we should is often a way of saying, “If I don’t do this on my own, there is something wrong with me.” There is nothing wrong with seeking help to achieve goals, especially when the relationship is as empowering as coaching is. At the end of the day, you will reach your goals on your own. The coach is there to help maximize your personal and professional potential, but any progress made will be because of your work, your talents and skills, your energy and drive, your resolve, your decision-making – including the decision to hire a coach in the first place.
